Overview
The G.SKILL Flare X5 is a 256GB DDR5 kit of 4 x 64GB modules, rated for 6,000 MT/s at 36-44-44-96 timings and 1.25V through its AMD EXPO profile. It is the low-profile, no-RGB version of the 256GB kit: four 64GB modules with the 33 mm Flare X5 heat spreader.
It carries an AMD EXPO profile, so it is aimed at Ryzen 7000 and 9000 (AM5) boards. Without the profile it runs at the default 5600 MT/s at 1.10V; one BIOS setting brings it to 6,000 MT/s. 64GB modules need a motherboard BIOS dated 2025 or later with 64GB module support, so update the BIOS before installing. Four modules load the memory controller more than two, so stability at the rated speed depends on the board and CPU; check the board's memory support list before ordering.
256GB is the ceiling of current desktop platforms. For local AI, 256GB holds mixture-of-experts models in the 235B class at 4-bit, among the largest open models a desktop board can run.

Questions and answers

Will this kit work with my motherboard?
It fits any DDR5 desktop board, and its EXPO profile targets AMD AM5 (Ryzen 7000 and 9000). Intel boards can run it at default speed or with manual settings. It does not fit DDR4 boards. 64GB modules also need a BIOS dated 2025 or newer.
How do I get the rated 6,000 MT/s?
Enable the AMD EXPO profile in the BIOS. Without it the kit runs at the default 5600 MT/s. Rated speeds depend on the CPU's memory controller and the board, so a small number of systems need a BIOS update or a slightly lower speed.
Is four-module DDR5 stable?
It is harder for the memory controller than two modules. G.SKILL rates this kit as a matched set of four at the speed shown, but whether a given board and CPU hold it depends on the system. Update the BIOS and check the board's memory support list; if needed, run it a step slower.
Is 256GB enough for local AI?
For local AI, 256GB holds mixture-of-experts models in the 235B class at 4-bit, among the largest open models a desktop board can run.
Can I add another kit later?
Memory makers sell kits as matched sets and advise against mixing kits, even identical ones, because the modules are tested together. Buy the total capacity you want as one kit.
