How to choose RAM
Capacity first. 32GB (2x16GB) is the standard for gaming, 64GB suits streaming, video editing and heavy multitasking, and 96GB to 256GB is for workstations and for running AI models on the CPU.
For AMD Ryzen 7000 and 9000 processors, 6000MT/s at CL30 is the widely recommended sweet spot. Intel Core Ultra 200S processors can run faster kits, including CUDIMM modules at 8000MT/s and above on Z890 boards. At the same speed, a lower CL number means lower latency.
Turn on EXPO (AMD) or XMP (Intel) in your motherboard's BIOS to run a kit at its rated speed. Two modules usually run faster than four, and one matched kit is more reliable than two mixed kits. ECC registered modules (RDIMMs) are only for workstation platforms such as Threadripper and Xeon; they don't work in desktop motherboards. If you're upgrading an AM4 or older Intel system, pick DDR4; 3200MT/s at CL16 is the common choice.
RAM & memory: questions
Is 32GB or 64GB of RAM better for gaming?
32GB is enough for gaming today. Choose 64GB if you also stream, edit video, run virtual machines or keep many apps open.
What do EXPO and XMP mean?
They are memory profiles stored on the modules. Enabling EXPO on AMD or XMP on Intel in the BIOS sets the rated speed and timings; without it, memory runs at a slower default speed.
Will this RAM fit my motherboard?
DDR5 kits fit AM5 and Intel DDR5 motherboards, and DDR4 kits fit AM4 and Intel DDR4 boards; the two aren't interchangeable. Laptops and mini PCs take smaller SO-DIMM modules. Check your board's memory support list for the fastest kits, and use CUDIMM kits with Intel Core Ultra 200S boards.
Can I mix two RAM kits?
It often works but isn't guaranteed and can force lower speeds. For the best stability, buy one kit with the total capacity you need.
